GoldPages Expo Brunei 09

030

I been told on that day(12th July) that Priz gonna join the fashion makeup competition for GPEP @ the mall. Since I has just acquired my DSLR (to see how it perform) and also to give some moral support for Priz, I decided to go with full anticipation.

This time the stage was position at the side of the main hall, while other booth was station at the centre, while I don't understand why such a setup (didn't have enough budget?), that didn't bother me so much.

One of the main participants is skin food, they hire dancers to perform on the stage and also some makeup session. Look like Eileen trying hard to push their products awareness to the public. (It was so crowed that I didn't manage to go to the front to snap)

At the end of the day, I really like how Canon EOS 30D perform in such situations; great high ISO1600 with enough shutter speed to capture snap after snap. It is also through this events I found out some of the limitations of my lens, while it perform decently at such events, times just came that I wish I have a longer zoom to help with the compositions, another things is that aperture 5.6 @ the zoom end (55mm) just cannot provide fast enough shutter speed even at ISO1600.

By the way I also realised that peoples actually treat you differently when you are holding a DSLR, some of my friends actually though I'm working as a photographer/journalist, which I believe some of the passing by also think the same things when I'm snapping them.

Canon 30D

                                               frontview-001

After months of struggle with my Panasonic FZ-28 and wanted a proper DSLR, I finally got myself a used Canon EOS 30D. Really want to thanks Terence for passing me the info for this deal, remarkable cheap for such camera (even though it is a 3 years old model) You can read the reviews from DPreview

After acquire this camera with a 18-55mm IS kit lens, I can honestly said I'm hook to DSLR. While the picture quality not that much difference compare to my Panasonic DMC FZ28 in day light, it is the high ISO performance that set this 2 camera apart. While I have to hesitate to use ISO800 with FZ28, I can happily snap photo with ISO1600 using 30D and the pictures is clearer than my Fz28 with ISO800 mode.

This shoot is taken @ ISO 1600 with some PP

Another different with 30D compare to FZ28 is how fast can it Auto Focus to the subject, it is so fast that I can burst photo like a machine gun  XD

And it help a lot to capture that "moments"

Even as great as it is, I have to say  that Canon 30D is not beginner friendly at all. If you have no ideas about aperture, shutter speed, exposure, and especially ISO and expecting you can take photo with Auto Mode. I can bet most users will be disappointed.

It is the time I have with my FZ28 and learning through the web that help me really appreciate what a DSLR camera can do. I also grateful that I didn't jump straight to DSLR , since I will most likely buy a beginner DSLR body at that time instead of a semi pro body.

So did I miss my FZ28? In certain aspect I will said yes.

But will I go back to use Point & shoot camera instead of DSLR? NO!!! Unless I need a light weight camera with movie shooting capability, even in that case I will most properly bring 2 together.

So did a DSLR make me a better photographer? I wish but too bad it didn't happen, at the end of the days, camera is just a tools, it is up to the users to turn it into arts, which I still have a long long way to go :P

One of the high light of the event is the fashion walk, and the reason I am there, since I never see a Brunei fashion show before, so decided to give it a watch.

Only after watching it and explained by friend, only then I realised this is actually a fashion walk competition where models wear cloth from various sponsor and trying to promote B Mobile service to the public, and the best model will win a price too.

I hear she is quite a famous singer from Indonesia, but sorry that I don't know her name. Any kind soul wanna help me out? :p

One of the pedalboard from the Indonesia band. I'm really drooling over that H&K Tubeman Pre-amp

One of the sight of such events is that you can for sure see a lot of peoples took out their hand phone and start to video/ photo the events. Which is not possible 10 years or even 5 years before.

016

Overall the events was fun and interesting, but I just cannot understand how some of the models get past the audition stage, or did they have audition for the models?

This was my first attempts to take event photography, and it is really challenging and tough. At time like this, I really wise that I have a decent DSLR on hand so I can grab better shot that what I have now, but it is still a great learning experience for me.
